This week I learnt about typography and communication and the importance of making sure that the font is easy to read.

The Humble Letterform

• Willi Kunz- Willi was a graphic designer and typographer. He is most known for his approach to Swiss style typography.

• Wolfgang Weingart- German graphic designer and typographer. Had a big impact on the postmodern aesthetic in the 1970’s & 1980’s.

• Jan Tschichold- Jan was a graphic designer and typographer who also designed books. He created asymmetric typography.

Symmetry is important because it makes content more appealing for the viewer to look at it. For example a book should be symmetric to make it easier to read and follow along with the words.

The Letter

The spacing of letters is used to make phrases or sentences look neater and evenly placed. The x height is when all of the letters within a sentence line up evenly with each other.

The first project of the lecture I had to choose a letter and either remove or add an element to it to distort it.

Then I did the same thing with two letters. I chose an ‘i’ and an ‘O’ which made the overall project look like a ‘Q’

It is important when writing content the typography is correct because if a paragraph is written fully in capital letters it isn’t as easy to read and also doesn’t look as neat. The spacing of letters is also important because if the letters are too close together then it make it harder to read, meaning that viewers would find it harder to understand what is being said.
